- Dylan in Britain
Marking the 60th anniversary of Bob Dylan's first UK tour in 1965 Dylan in Britain Talk in the Discovery Zone Saturday 10 May, 2pm To mark the 60th anniversary of Bob Dylan's first UK tour in May 1965 - which included a show here in Liverpool at the Odeon Theatre - the See You Down The Front podcast has joined with Dylan expert Chris Hockenhull for an illustrated talk to discuss the legendary singer's early visits to the UK and their impact. Bob Dylan's visits, tours and one-off gigs in Britain in the 1960s and 70s contained some important and widely discussed moments in his career including the infamous 'Judas' heckle that greeted his move away from acoustic music, his headlining slot at the Isle of Wight festival and his return to Europe after almost a decade for a run of Earl's Court shows as well as the huge outdoor `Picnic' gig at Blackbushe Aerodrome in front of a reputed 200,000 people. Plus there will be the story of how, for a BBC TV show, Chris re-created Dylan's celebrated photograph surrounded by local children in Dublin Street, Liverpool, from 1966, bringing back many of those who had appeared in the original shot four decades later. Entry is free and the talk will take place at 2pm in the museum's Discovery Zone.

- Ian Broudie | BME
An in conversation event to launch Ian Broudie's memoir Tomorrow's Here Today. Tomorrow's Here Today: In Conversation with Ian Broudie Thursday 26 October, 7.30pm BME is delighted to host the book launch event for Ian Broudie’s memoir, Tomorrow’s Here Today – Lighting Seeds, Football and Cosmic Post Punk. Few musicians have lived a musical life as rich as the songwriter and producer Ian Broudie. From recording the glorious uplifting psychedelic pop of his band The Lightning Seeds, to producing bands like Echo & The Bunnymen and The Fall, Ian has journeyed from the energy and potential of the 1970s punk scene to the madness of 90s indie – and out the other side. Throughout nearly fifty years of making music, he has had a front row seat working with generations of fantastic musicians as they created countless ground-breaking records. In Tomorrow's Here Today, he reveals what he has learnt about creativity, how to work with musicians touched by genius, and what it is like to stumble through an exploding industry without losing sight of your dreams. Along the way Ian shares how he wrote the million selling album Jollification and how – along with the comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner – he wrote and recorded the only single in chart history to reach number one in the UK singles chart on four separate occasions. Three Lions has since become the undisputed unofficial anthem of English football, soundtracking heartbreaking defeats as well as the wondrous victories of the Lionesses. Following 2022’s long awaited Lighting Seeds comeback, Ian reflects on a life of cosmic adventures spent in thrall to the power of music Ian Broudie is a musician, singer-songwriter and producer from Liverpool. Well known for his band the Lightning Seeds, co-writing the anthem 'Three Lions' and producing bands such as Echo & The Bunnymen, The Fall & The Coral. Ian will be in conversation with Dave Simpson. - John McGeoch | BME
Celebrating the life and music of John McGeoch Celebrating the Life and Music of John McGeoch Tuesday 3 May, 7.30pm Join us for a very special night celebrating the life and music of John McGeoch. The BME is delighted to welcome author Rory Sullivan-Burke on the publication of 'The Light Pours Out Of Me - the authorised biography of John McGeoch'. McGeoch was the guitarist of the post-punk era. Blazing a trail with some of Britain’s biggest bands and most revered artists – Magazine, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Armoury Show and Public Image Ltd. – John refined playing the electric guitar and left an undeniable and indelible mark on music. “John played everything in the service of the song. His feel, and the sound of his guitar, is just so fluid and musical” – Jonny Greenwood / Radiohead 'The Light Pours Out of Me' examines John’s life and legacy, drawing on original interviews with the likes of Siouxsie Sioux, Howard Devoto, Johnny Marr, Billy Idol, John Frusciante, Keith Levene, Jonny Greenwood, Nick Launay, Ed O’Brien, Peter Hook and many others. "The work that we made together was stunning. Just stunning” – Siouxsie Sioux / Siouxsie & The Banshees Illustrated with unseen photographs, this moving biography – authorised by the family – celebrates the remarkable guitarist who helped provide the soundtrack to a generation. John's guitar lines have had a deeply profound impact on many of us and the British Music Experience is honoured to be able to help bring this story into the world. “An absorbing account of the late post-punk guitarist. This is a labour of love, befitting a much-loved man” – Classic Rock RORY SULLIVAN-BURKE will be joined by MALCOLM GARRETT (designer of Magazine record sleeves and ex-flatmate, who introduced John to Howard Devoto in 1977) and DAVE FORMULA (John's ex-bandmate in both Magazine & Visage) for a very special onstage discussion chaired by RONNIE GURR. ‘The Light Pours Out Of Me’ is published by Omnibus Press on 28 April. - Sam Ryder outfit | BME
Sam Ryder's Iconic Space Man jumpsuit on display at the British Music Experience Sam Ryder's Space Man Jumpsuit On Display at BME Harking back to some of the stage outfits of the likes of Ziggy Stardust, Freddie Mercury and Elton John, Sam Ryder’s black denim jumpsuit is encrusted with jewelled glass crystals, beads, pearls and embroidered symbolism. Luke Day was the stylist behind the monochrome jumpsuit which is heavy with symbols of the sun, moon, planets and stars. Inspiration was taken from heritage greats such as Bowie and Elvis as well as Sam’s love of astronomy and astrology. Without being gimmicky there is also a trace of the Union Jack in the design. Day enlisted the help of illustrator Joseph Larkowsky to get his and Ryder’s vision onto paper, while embroiderer Jenny King worked tirelessly to embellish the suit. And it shows. It shows how much Sam cared about representing the UK at the 66th Eurovision Song Contest. Sam Ryder won the hearts and minds of Eurovision and remains a favourite with fans being hailed as authentic with an incredible voice. Ryder has quickly become a national treasure. Describing the outfit Sam Ryder commented, “This jumpsuit was worn at the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Turin during our performance of Space Man. For me, it tells the story of a turning point in the competition for the UK and in my personal journey with music. The suit itself took over 210 hours of work and over 15,000 beads and gems to create (around the same number of hours I spent practising the high notes in the song!) The process of writing Space Man with dear friends, the journey we went on as a team and the positive reception and result we received all culminated in a moment shared in this suit, and I couldn’t be more grateful it’s going on public display for Liverpool and fans a round the world to enjoy. ” Sam’s stylist, Luke Day commented, “Once I'd heard the song, I knew I wanted to be involved. I met Sam at the end of March and I'd seen his Eurovision rehearsal performance and knew that if we got the outfit right, this could be a real moment. A lot of the concept inspiration came from Britain's musical heritage; Ziggy Stardust, Freddie Mercury, Elton John. We wanted it to have a galactic, ‘space man’ feel, without it being too literal but to reflect his love of astronomy and astrology. Another inspiration was the Union Jack flag coat that David Bowie wore in the Nineties, which was designed by Alexander McQueen. The large cross design on Sam's body is taken from that piece. I enlisted the help of illustrator Joseph Larkowsky to get his and Ryder's vision onto paper, while embroiderer Jenny King worked for over 200 hours to hand embellish the suit with more than 15,000 pearls, beads and gems with sun, moon and star motifs. ”
